Vehicle

Mass Effect - the Mako vehicle that is used when landing on alien worlds.

Description

A vehicle is a mode of transport the player may acquire in order to complete an objective. The vehicle in essence replaces the player character with a new one, giving the user a new set of controls, way of movement, and health bar. For example, while on horseback, a hero will move quicker, and may have options for mounted combat as opposed to normal combat. Another possibility is a futuristic tank, with a main gun, lighter machine gun, and a boost option. These abilities are entirely separate from the hero's main set of abilities.

Vehicles allow players to complete more difficult missions, give them a break from normal gameplay, and provide different combat strategies such as mowing down enemies or escaping from combat.

Variables and Affordances

  • Vehicle Abilities/Stats: these are usually different from the player's
  • Time: if there is a time limit on how long the vehicle can be used
  • Area: since vehicles provide different abilities (and are often beneficial in combat as they provide more power and protection), there are often boundaries for the area in which the vehicle can be used. For example, vehicles usually cannot enter buildings.

Examples

  • Mass Effect. Vehicles are used on vehicle missions whenever the player leaves the safety of the ship or a space stations to explore uninhabited planets.
  • World of Warcraft. The Wrath of the Lich King and Cataclysm expansions include vehicle based Boss Battles in the dungeon “The Oculus” and “Ulduar” as well as vehicle based player vs player sections such as the battleground “The Strand of the Ancients”.

Quest-Level Relationships

  • Vehicle Mission - Used within any quest that involves vehicles.
  • Contextualizing Quests - Often early on in a game where vehicles become important later on, there will be a relatively simple quest that introduces you to using the vehicle.
