======Residence====== Oblivion =====Description===== A residence is a room or set of rooms in which an NPC or family of NPCs resides. A residence often contains a few containers with common items, and the NPCs may be involved in a side quest or in the story, but they're otherwise just for flavor. Residences are often located in cities or nuclei, though some residences exist sparsely in uncharted areas. Residences help to make cities and nuclei feel more populated and realistic, and give the player more areas to explore to gather common items, enhance their story experience, and possibly find side quests. =====Variables and Affordances===== * **Number of rooms in the residence**: changes the effort needed by the player to explore the room and sometimes implies a certain social standing for the residents. * **Number of NPCs in the family**: changes the effort needed by the player to talk to every NPC. * **Number of containers in residence**: this is correlated to the reward the player receives for exploring. * **Quest/story relation** (//Flavor or Quest-related//): flavor NPCs may add to the lore and make the environment feel more real, while quest related NPCs hold significance to the player for completing the game. =====Examples===== * Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn. The cities in Baldur's Gate II contain numerous residences inhabited by townspeople. * Fable 2. Residences in Fable 2 can be purchased and either become a home for the main character and his/her family, or be rented out to other NPCs. Entering another NPC's home without permission can often result in that NPC reacting poorly to the intrusion, as opposed to townspeople in Baldur's Gate II who typically do not react to the player's presence. ====In Worked Examples==== * Collect the fee for Gaelan Bayle * A Rat Problem =====Related Patterns===== * City. Many residences are found in cities. * Nucleus. Many residences are found in nuclei. * Uncharted Area. Occasionally residences are found scattered in uncharted areas. =====Quest-Level Relationship===== * Hidden Quest. Hidden quests can be found while rifling through the belongings of an NPC in their home. * Arrowhead Questing. If the same NPC gives every quest within an Arrowhead quest chain, the player frequently returns to their home. * Continuous Side Quests. Continuous side quests might spawn from or involve the NPCs from residences.
