Altering Side Stub

Description

Altering Side Stubs are branches from a mission, allowing the player to complete some side task before the final objective. The results of completing the side stub alters the current quest hand, for better or worse.

A common function of Altering Side Stubs is to allow the player to lower the difficulty of a later action in the quest. This pattern might apply to side areas in dungeons, where going into these provides a reward to help with the final challenge of the quest. This is not always the case though, as Altering Side Stubs can be used as a tool for punishing the player for making poor choices. Altering Side Stubs do not require a physical exploration in a different location; it could involve entering dialog with an interactive NPC to either request or reject help.

Variables and Affordances

  • Impact: how much of a change to the main quest line the side stub has.
  • Difficulty: how difficult the side stub is compared to the main quest it is attached to
  • Length: how much time the side stub takes in comparison to the main quest it is attached to

Examples

  • Dragon Age: Origins. In the dwarven proving missions, the player can complete certain immediate side quests to allow legendary dwarven warriors to fight along side them. Completing these quests is not required to advance the main story, as the player can enter the proving grounds alone, but enlisting the help of one of the dwarves provides a huge advantage.

In Worked Examples

  • Delayed Result. If the event altered by the stub happens much later, it is an instance of a delayed result pattern.

Quest-Level Relationship

Acknowledgments

This pattern is similar to Scriptease's “Conditional Reward” pattern. Conditional Reward does not require that the player perform the same action at the end of the quest.
